In addition to his own studio chops and experience, he has developed an excellent talent for interviewing the other pros, drawing out the classic tales of missteps, mayhem and meant-to-be happy accidents. Lij Shaw interviews people in the business of recording, mixing, mastering, production, songwriting and all things "recording studio". This sounds like an overstatement, but it's not. Thanks a lot Lij and keep up the great work! And what might at times seem highbrow and beyond the reach of many aspiring students of recording, Lij is able to condense into simple 'take-aways' - a credit to his broad understanding of all things sonic, but also to the needs of (some of) his audience. And of course there are a couple of engineers in the mix (excuse the pun). He also has a wonderful range of guests on the show, so rather than just listen to engineer after engineer talk gear, you might one day hear an acoustician talking spaces, and the next a songwriter talking processes and giving practical tips. Personality aside, it is clear that Lij possesses a wealth of experience and knowledge extending to all areas of sound, recording and production. This is largely due to the host Lij's wonderful manner - warm and playful, and self-deprecating almost to a fault. Like any good podcast you can take this one anywhere with you and it's like having an old friend there. If it makes a noise and you can play it or record it, he’s interested. ![]() James or Jivey is officially the Production Expert gear junkie. Since then he has worked for studio equipment suppliers and installers as well as companies like Sibelius and later Avid and a production demonstrator. James’ first job in the audio industry was with a pop video production company where he learned what the term deadline really means and other audio skills which have stuck with him, like the importance of clock and sync. His parents brought him is first 4-track tape recorder (a Tascam Porta 01 costing well over £1000) at the age of 12 which gave him the bug for recording and ever since then he has been collecting and acquiring gear to make his studio and productions the best they can be. From that moment on there was no stopping him. James has been playing drums since the tender age of 7, performing his first paid gigs at the age of 8. My guest today is James Ivey, the Technical Editor of Pro Tools Expert and owner and facilitator at Location Recordings in London UK. ![]() James talked about creating videos for Production Expert, how to shoot great video for your music in the studio, Location Recording studio in the UK, how to record great sounding drums in a small studio, and how to create a network backup system.
